Dungeon (Squared) is a concept I have had in mind for some time now. Inspired by my love of Dungeons & Dragons, I wanted to design something portable that played in a relatively short time, but carried through that feeling of exploration and cooperation that you get out of a good game of D&D. It's an amalgam of cooperation and competition, luck and skill, narrative, role playing and fun. The dungeon is randomly generated from a pool of rooms, so there is variety in each game. Each player begins the game as one of the four characters, Warrior, Mage, Cleric or Thief. Characters have a unique special power they can use to assist themselves or the party during the game. Each character deck starts with a similar pool of resources which players can build on while they face off against the challenges of the dungeon. Like many games the more the players put into the game, the more they get out of it, and it leaves plenty of space for players to engage with each other and to create an experience. So far, everyone I have played this with (from 10 year olds to 20 somethings to those of us in our 40's) has had a great time, regardless of who won, or if we survived the dungeon at all.
